Seasonal Traditions

A Coco Night with SF Symphony

As the temperature drops and nights come earlier, it’s the perfect time to dive into the vibrant world of Coco. This evening, Friday November 1, the SF Symphony brings this beloved film to life with a live orchestral performance for a magical evening at Davies Symphony Hall. As Miguel journeys through the Land of the Dead, you’ll feel every note and emotion resonate in the hall. If you’re new to Coco, it’s more than just a movie; it’s a heartfelt celebration of family and connection that will linger in your heart long after the credits roll.

Dia de los Muertos Festival

Join the spirited Dia de los Muertos Festival of Altars on Saturday, November 2 from afternoon until late night at Potrero Del Sol Park. Hosted by the Marigold Project, this annual celebration honors ancestors in a heartfelt Ritual Circle starting at 5 PM. Attendees are encouraged to bring offerings—votive candles in glass, flowers, photos, and cherished items—to create meaningful tributes. This family-friendly, alcohol-free event invites everyone to participate in a day filled with healing, culture, and the rich traditions that keep the memories of loved ones alive.

Union Square Ice Rink Opening

The Safeway Holiday Ice Rink in Union Square, presented by Kaiser Permanente, opens on Wednesday, November 6, and runs through January 20, 2025. This cherished tradition invites families and friends to enjoy outdoor skating in downtown San Francisco. Special events throughout the season, such as Drag On Ice, Silent Skate, and Polar Bear Skate, add festive flair. For those looking to learn, free skating lessons with rentals are offered every weekend, but space is limited. The December Learn to Skate lottery opens on November 1, so get ready to channel your inner Kristi Yamaguchi and glide into holiday cheer.
